The 4th East Lake Forum on Global Governance organized by Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and supported by China World Peace Foundation (CWPF) and other institutes was held during 24 to 25 November 2018 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, with the theme “Community with a Shared Future for Mankind and Global Governance”. Over 200 experts and scholars from 14 countries attended the forum. At the opening ceremony, Academician Li Yuanyuan, president of HUST introduced the university’s academic achievements and its influence in the domestic and international educational circle and advocated the opening of academic exchanges platforms for spreading the voice of friendship across the world. Mr. Liu Honglan, vice president of Hubei Social Sciences Association said in his remarks, “We only share one earth and all members of the community with a shared future shall collaborate.” Mr. Yu Hongjun, former vice-minister of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee, analyzed the stupendous changes in the Asian-pacific region in the past 100 year, bringing forward the vision and actions of the community with a shared future, and talking about ideal and reality and national rejuvenation and going global. Prof. Grzegorz W. Kolodko, former Polish Deputy Prime Minister said in his speech, “Socialist countries’ globalization faces challenges from the U.S.. Globalization or trade and technical barriers? Achieve win-win or American first? This is not a zero sum game. It is about reestablishing the international order.
Prof. Li Ruohong, president of CWPF talked about the historical experience of the Chinese nation going through the two world wars, the Cultural Revolution, the Reform and Opening-Up, all the way to the New era and respective international contexts and elaborated on the ways to use people’s diplomacy, cross-civilization cooperation, effective communication, and social responsibility to demonstrate soft power and inject new impetus to the “community with a shared future for mankind” in the midst of contradiction and rebalances. He further introduced the Peace Garden Declaration issued by UNESCO and the inclusive scope, structure, objectives and themes of the related project “An Interactive Atlas of Cultural Interactions along the Silk Roads”, pointing out the content and significance of the Route of Culture and the Public Welfare for Peace, and their guidance and influence on people in their understanding and reforming of the world. Prof. Ouyang Kang, Dean of the Institute of the State Governance, introduced the values, key ideas, and academic achievements of the East Lake Forum and the contributions of the institute in governance projects in global scale and in levels of state, provinces, counties and towns. During the forum, heads of international think tanks and representatives of think tanks affiliated to different ministries and provincial and municipal governments discussed on the development direction of the community with a shared future in perspectives of economy, culture, society, international organizations, and regional structure during parallel meetings and private sessions.
